Careers & Internships

Whenever a job vacancy arises at Portobello Books we will post details on this page.  In additon, we usually advertise in the Bookseller and occasionally in the Guardian.  Unfortunately, due to the high number of enquiries we receive, we cannot respond to speculative applications.

Current vacancies at Portobello Books:

Granta Publications – Contracts Manager (maternity cover)

Granta Publications is an independent publisher comprising Granta Books, Granta magazine and Portobello Books. We are based in west London.

Here is a great opportunity to join our team as Contracts Manager, covering all head and subsidiary rights agreements across the company (books and magazine). A minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role is preferred.

The successful applicant will have excellent negotiating skills, a cool head and the ability to juggle a varied administrative workload across all aspects of our publishing programme.

The preferred start date is mid to late April 2015.

To apply, please email jobs@granta.com with your CV, cover letter and salary expectations by Friday 27th February.

Portobello Books also runs a work experience programme for graduates interested in finding out more about a career in publishing. We’re looking for enthusiastic, hardworking interns who have a genuine passion for great writing.

We are a small company, so our interns work across a variety of departments. This is a great way to get an overview of different areas of the industry, from sales and marketing to publicity and editorial. Our interns find themselves doing a lot of reading, research and ad hoc admin tasks, and their time is most frequently co-opted by the editorial and publicity teams. The work is not all glamorous but it is all necessary, and provides a great insight into how the industry operates.

Placements last four weeks and are unpaid, although we offer a fixed payment of £75 a week to cover expenses.

To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter to internships@portobellobooks.com.
