Portobello Books - encouraging voices, supporting writers, challenging readers.

Portobello Books Ltd was founded at the beginning of 2005 in London at a time when the dynamics of conglomerate publishing in the English-speaking world mean that fewer and fewer literary works of singularity and significance are being published vigorously and with due respect for the author as creator and for the book as durable transmitter of wisdom and wonder.

Portobello Books is independently funded and will therefore be able to take more risks than is common in contemporary publishing. It will promote new voices and innovative writing from around the world: fiction in English and in translation, as well as an array of politically, historically, anthropologically and culturally engaged non-fiction.

Portobello Books hopes that its work in general and this website in particular will act as a kind of literary souk, where visitors may encounter a dazzling array of colours, scents and tastes.
